WhatsApp QR Code: Let Customers Message You With One Scan

A wa.me link encodes your WhatsApp number into a QR code. One scan opens a chat window — no number saving, no searching. Here's how to make one.

WhatsApp has over two billion users. Outside the US, it's the primary way people communicate with businesses — for bookings, questions, order updates, and customer support. A WhatsApp QR code on a table card, flyer, or receipt lets customers open a chat with you in one tap, without saving your number or searching for your account.

Here's how to build one in two minutes.

The wa.me link format

WhatsApp provides a universal link format that opens a chat directly:

https://wa.me/COUNTRYCODEPHONENUMBER

Include your full international phone number — no spaces, no dashes, no leading zeros. Examples:

  • UK (+44 7911 123456): https://wa.me/447911123456
  • US (+1 555 867 5309): https://wa.me/15558675309
  • Brazil (+55 11 99999-9999): https://wa.me/5511999999999

Test it in a browser before encoding — it should open WhatsApp (or ask you to install it) and show your contact pre-loaded.

Add a pre-filled message (optional)

You can include a message that auto-populates in the customer's chat window. Add a text parameter:

https://wa.me/447911123456?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20to%20make%20a%20booking

URL-encode any spaces and special characters. A booking business might pre-fill “Hi, I'd like to book a table for” — the customer just fills in the rest and sends. This removes the blank-message friction that often stops people from reaching out.

Where to use a WhatsApp QR

Restaurant tables and menus

A “Message us to book a table” QR on a table card converts better than a phone number. People would rather send a WhatsApp message than make a call — especially in the evening when restaurants are loud. Pre-fill a message like “Hi, I'd like to reserve a table” to lower the friction further.

Service business receipts and cards

Hair salons, repair shops, tutors, cleaners — any service business where repeat bookings matter. Put the QR on a business card or receipt with “Rebook on WhatsApp” and the customer can reach you in the channel they actually use.

Product packaging and inserts

For physical product businesses: “Question about your order? Message us on WhatsApp.” This reduces support email volume and creates faster resolutions. Customers who get a quick response on WhatsApp convert to repeat buyers at higher rates. See also: QR codes on product packaging.

Flyers and outdoor signage

If you advertise locally — A5 flyers, lamppost ads, market stall signs — a WhatsApp QR gives passersby a zero-friction way to contact you. Most won't type a phone number from a flyer; many will scan a QR and tap send.

WhatsApp Business vs personal number

The wa.me link works with both. The WhatsApp Business app adds away messages, quick replies, catalog features, and a separate business profile. If you're putting your number on printed materials, a WhatsApp Business account is worth setting up — it shows your business name and hours in the chat header rather than just a phone number.

Sizing and branding tips

  • Minimum 20mm × 20mm for reliable scanning at close range.
  • Use a green accent color in your QR design — it signals WhatsApp immediately and increases scan rates on branded materials.
  • Always label it: “Chat on WhatsApp” with the WhatsApp icon nearby. People scan things they understand.
  • Test on both iOS and Android before printing.
